Caution

If you are thinking about adding a Big Dog to your family, you should know that it's not all fluffy puppies. I drool a lot. And I like to dig in the mud and then get it all over My People. And I have to walk every day or I get too wild. My People met many, many St. Bernards before they adopted me, and they don't mind messes very much!

Busted

Yawn. Stretch. Groan.

Oh, hi. I haven't been able to write much lately because I've been hibernating. Well, not really, because dogs don't truly hibernate, but I have been taking it easy. Unfortunately, this morning The Woman discovered one of my secret napping spots. I'm wearing my gentle leader because we were supposed to be getting ready to go for a walk when I snuck away to snooze.

She took some pictures so you can see too. I don't understand why it's a big deal, all the other creatures sleep up there. Except those little swimming things.

Weird Stuff

Hi, it's me, Scout! I'm back after a long break from writing.

Lots has been going on around here. First the family moved a TREE inside the house. That was weird. Then they put a bunch of lights and hanging things on it. At night it looked like this:

Later, they took the tree back outside and stuck it in the ground. Then Terry, my good friend who drives the Really Big Smelly Truck, came and took it away. Weird again. After it was gone, The Man started doing things in the place where they used to have fires. Here's a picture of that.

Pretty soon I noticed some new creatures living in there. They are orange and black and swim around in a big box of water and plants that The Man put in there. Also weird. At first I was a little bit excited because I thought they might play with me. But they don't even make eye contact.

Does weird stuff like this ever happen where you live?

Scout's a Little Sad Today

Scout's a little sad because she got suspended from her boarding school (actually it's just kind of her overnight babysitter). Apparently being around about 50 other dogs running around and barking stresses her out. When she's excited she barks and chases littler dogs and they don't like it that much.

She's really big so The People at the school have a hard time handling her, especially since the dogs don't wear collars there. And they don't take care of any other Saint Bernards so they aren't really used to it.

She is very exhausted. She has slept THE WHOLE day, except for eating a bowl of food and going outside to go to the bathroom. She's also shedding a lot, another sign that she was pretty anxious at school.

We have some other places in mind for her to stay next time we go out of town. Quieter, more peaceful places.

Happiness Is...

...a friend you love so much that you bark and wag your tail every time someone says her name.

My friend's name is Dixie.

Happiness Is...

...a long walk and a face full of snow.

P.S. The black strap across my face doesn't hurt me. It's called a Gentle Leader. I don't like it much, but have agreed to wear it to help me remember to not pull the people over.

Scout Goes to the Doctor

My Kids and I all saw our doctors this week. They went for check-ups; I went because I have been feeling a little bit sick to my stomach. I'm kind of frustrated now because my doctor told The Mom to stop giving me treats like beef, liver, and other stuff that I REALLY like. The doctor said that even though I'm very big, I'm still a puppy and those things might be making me sort of sick.

I had to go to the doctor one other time for a problem. It was this spring after I had been running in woods and fields all weekend with my friend Sammy the Spaniel. (Don't we look like we're having fun?) We got into all sorts of great messy, stinky stuff like ponds and wet leaves and muck. It got under my fur and didn't dry out well and I got an infection on my skin. That time the doctor had to shave off a bunch of my fur. Ouch.

It's not fun being sick. I miss my favorite snacks. But I try to be cooperative and not steal food off the table because I know my family is just trying to help me get well.

Keep sending me emails. I love reading them (when I'm not resting on piles of boots).

A friend of The Mom's sent one recently that told the story of Jan the St. Bernard. Jan's People liked to go swimming at Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis. One summer they took him to the beach with them.

That sounds like a lot of fun, but I guess it was kind of a problem for Jan. He kept thinking that His Kids were in trouble out in the water. St. Bernards were first bred to be rescue dogs, so if we think there is a problem, we want to help. Jan would swim to His Kids, grab their suits in his mouth, and try to drag them back to shore.

The next time they went to the beach they left him home.

Snow

I was born in snow season. I LOVE snow. So do my kids as you can see below.

When spring came I would look for every last patch of snow to lie on. We're very excited because we heard it might snow this weekend. Do you like snow?

New Friends

Goodness; My Kids have been very busy lately. They have been playing, learning, arguing with The Mom and The Dad, and other stuff. It's been so hectic that they haven't had time to help me write my blog.

So The Mom is helping me today.

I met a new very nice friend this weekend. I know he is very nice because he scratched behind my ears. He is the same age as The Girl. He came over with his aunt who is a friend of The Mom's.

It's nice to make new friends. And exhausting. Here's what I looked like after they left.
